The American coffee shop, by the numbers
We read the public Google Maps listing of 2,997 coffee shops in 61 US cities, the ones Google itself returns for "coffee shop" at each city centre, and counted what they say about themselves: ratings, hours, online ordering, accessibility, who roasts. We have not visited them. This is what the listings say, with the method and the sample size behind every number.
The headline numbers
2,997 shops in 61 cities, 1,429,213 Google reviews between them, listings read 2026-10-01 to 2026-10-21.
The median shop is rated 4.7 from 317 reviews; 90% are rated 4.5 or higher and 58% sit at 4.7 or higher with at least 20 reviews. It opens at 7 AM and closes at 5 PM: 15% are open by 6 AM and 72% by 7 AM, but only 44% are still open at 6 PM, 21% past 8 PM and 15% past 9 PM. 75% open seven days a week; 17% close on Sunday. 55% carry an online-ordering link, 91% a website, and 84% list a wheelchair-accessible entrance. 11% also roast their own beans.

Where the ratings run highest
Google ratings cluster tightly: the gap between the best- and worst-rated city is a few tenths of a star. The share rated 4.5 or higher separates them better.
- Median rating: Cincinnati 4.8★, Milwaukee 4.8★, St. Louis 4.8★, Kansas City 4.8★, Louisville 4.8★. Lowest: Boulder 4.6★, Miami 4.6★, Castle Rock 4.6★, Boston 4.6★, San Jose 4.5★.
- Rated 4.5 or higher: Pittsburgh 100%, Cincinnati 100%, Milwaukee 100%, San Antonio 100%, Colorado Springs 100%. Lowest: Boulder 78%, Miami 77%, San Jose 72%, Castle Rock 64%, Boston 63%.
- Rated 4.7 or higher, 20+ reviews: Cincinnati 91%, Colorado Springs 82%, Pittsburgh 79%, Minneapolis 75%, Milwaukee 75%. Lowest: Washington 40%, Boston 37%, Castle Rock 36%, Sacramento 35%, San Jose 21%.
Ordering ahead
55% of shops carry Google's order-online link. The spread between cities is wide.
- Take online orders: Miami 82%, Las Vegas 75%, Hartford 73%, Los Angeles 72%, Dallas 72%. Lowest: San Jose 39%, Boulder 39%, Louisville 34%, Minneapolis 34%, Fort Collins 32%.
Cafés that roast
316 of the 2,997 shops (11%) are listed as a roastery as well as a café: beans roasted on site or by the same business.
- Roast their own beans: Richmond 25%, Las Vegas 24%, Louisville 20%, Minneapolis 19%, Virginia Beach 18%. Lowest: Tampa 6%, Miami 5%, Memphis 3%, Castle Rock 3%, Atlanta 2%.
What Google does not know
For 175 of the 2,997 listings (6%) Google publishes its amenity tags: Wi-Fi, good for working on a laptop, outdoor seating, dogs allowed, quiet. For the rest it returns a bare listing, and no amount of counting fixes that, so this page never ranks cities on Wi-Fi or laptop-friendliness. Where the listings are complete, mostly the Colorado cities we pulled in full, here is what they say:
| City | Shops | Tags present | Wi-Fi listed | Laptop-friendly | Outdoor seating | Dogs allowed | Quiet |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Colorado Springs | 40 | 100% | 80% | 70% | 70% | 60% | 40% |
| Littleton | 25 | 92% | 84% | 72% | 72% | 44% | 60% |
| Centennial | 14 | 86% | 79% | 79% | 71% | 36% | 57% |
| Highlands Ranch | 10 | 100% | 100% | 70% | 90% | 70% | 50% |
Outlets near the seats, clean tables, Wi-Fi speed and noise are things no listing records. Visitors report them on each shop's page, owners can correct anything free, and both are labelled by source on the page. 90 of the shops have not even claimed their own Google listing.

Method and sample
- Source. Each shop's public Google Maps listing, read through SerpApi's Google Maps engine with the query "coffee shop" at the city centre: up to three pages of results (about twenty a page) for the metros, one to three for Colorado's smaller towns, between 2026-10-01 and 2026-10-21.
- Sample. 2,997 shops after de-duplicating by Google place ID and assigning each shop to the nearest city centre. This is what Google returns for that search, not a census of every café in a city; a handful of businesses are left out under a house rule we do not publish.
- Chains. Flagged when the name matches a list of national chains (Starbucks, Dutch Bros, Dunkin', McDonald's, Panera, Scooter's, Black Rock, 7-Eleven, Einstein Bros, Caribou, Peet's, The Human Bean, Ziggi's, Biggby, Tim Hortons, Costa, PJ's, Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf, 7 Brew, Dazbog and grocery, big-box and gas-station counters). 99% of what Google returns is independent, which says as much about Google's results for "coffee shop" as about the market.
- Fields. Ratings and review counts as Google showed them on the read date; hours as listed (an owner who has claimed a page here can replace a day's hours, labelled owner-verified); "online ordering" means the listing carries Google's order-online link; "roast their own" means Google lists the business as a coffee roastery as well; "wheelchair-accessible entrance" is Google's own accessibility attribute, present on most listings.
- Percentages use the shops with that field present (hours are known for 2,977 of 2,997). Medians, not averages, so one outlier cannot move a city.
- Refresh. Colorado monthly, other cities quarterly; this page rebuilds with the finder, so numbers drift as listings change. The finder's own ranking (the Perch Score) is a different thing and is explained on the finder.
